Career profile

Ewa Ostrowska joined the company in may 2005 as a structural engineer in the Building Solutions team. Ewa’s main responsibility is to provide technical assistance for both our Finnframe® distributors and their customers, the national house builders. Ewa also advises architects and engineers on how to use our I-joists, Kerto® and Glulam by providing structural analysis and solutions.

Can you give us an overview of your day?

I try to solve all of the day-to-day requests we receive from our customers, including roof designs, remedial details, connection designs, or solve particular technical problems which have occurred during the design process. I also provide our distributors with support for the Finnframe® and Finnwood software. When I eventually find time, I try doing some technical Research & Development!

What do you like most about your job?
The most wonderful thing about my job is the diversity. This can be a curse from time to time as you cannot concentrate on one thing, as there are always new things happening – but I really enjoy it, there is no chance of ever getting bored! I like the Building Solutions team as we help each other and support each other well. We are passionate in what we do and everyone has different skills which enables us to work well as a unit.

What do you think makes your role important to the business?
I think my work gives a special value to the products. The design and technical assistance is necessary when it comes to the structural components. If we can offer a good level ofcustomer service it helps to create a bond with distributors, architects and engineers.

What is your main motivation?
I like what I do, I enjoy it when I can help. I like creating, designing and solving problems. I feel proud of the fact that when I travel around that I can say ”I did the design for that roof”. Also, helping a customer solve their problem is often very rewarding.

What do you find most challenging and rewarding about your job?
The most challenging thing about my job is the customers. It is not always easy to persuade them to do things in a different way. They often would like things to be simpler, sometimes not properly engineered, but it is really rewarding when they finally understand the point and they appreciate your work and thank you for your input.

What are your hobbies out of work?
I am a mother of an Autistic child so I do not have much time for hobbies. I enjoy spending time with him just doing things together. We love traveling around Britain and visiting historical places as my son loves castles. I came over from Poland two years ago, and I have made some friends with the Polish community in Boston and help them as much I can teaching English or helping with translations.
